Cuddly Alpacas

These cuddly alpacas are an essential member of the community in the freezing Peruvian Andes. Their milk is highly nutritious and their wool is an essential source of income - as well as providing insulation when temperatures drop to -35oC. But families are losing their precious alpacas to the worsening winters and need help to replenish their herd and keep them safe

Safe, clean water

Every year the homes and livelihoods of the people of Gaibandha in Bangladesh are washed away by the eroding rivers. Working with the community, Practical Action is introducing simple solutions that will protect them during the next floods and help them escape poverty.

Floods bring with them disease and sickness, so a tap stand provides them with a safe, clean water source, high above the flood level.

Mushroom Mothers

In Zimbabwe a group of women led by Nelly Siwela are working with children orphaned by HIV/Aids to help them support themselves by growing and selling mushrooms. Working with Practical Action the 'volunteer mothers' provide children with essential training so that they can make a small living and support their own education.

To help more orphans, 'volunteer' mothers need help to supply more training and expand their mushroom farms.
